lars clausen This ain't Manhattan

For a week I walked on nothing but concrete and tar – and loved it, all the people, and the places and all the pizza. And then how wonderful it felt to come home. A big wide street – and no one on it. After 5 days, I was walking on a Manhattan street and realized there was nowhere on the island I could go to find a quiet place. I had a great time in Manhattan, but I sure appreciate that we can touch dirt and grow food at Solid Rock, and we can live here in a place like Chelan. I’m looking for… Continue

lars clausen Garlic

Hi farm friends, Okay, whatever else happens at Solid Rock, I’m satisfied…on Saturday we harvested the garlic, 4 boxloads of hardneck and softnecks. Success. I’ve never grown or harvested garlic before. Nor had I ever hilled potatoes with straw. After piling dirt around a long row of potatoes I thought I was becoming a ditch digger. Gene suggested putting straw around the rest of the plants and letting the potatoes develop right in the straw. Anne and I put loads and loads of straw on last Sat… Continue

lars clausen The Basil are coming!

After weeks and weeks of sitting around in the “under an inch” category, our basil are on the move, with the first full size leaves coming in this past week. Thanks to all the help with weeding we can actually see these little pesto makers in their rows. Edible flowers are growing fast too. The workshed has some of the trim on it now. Thank you, thank you Gene for creating this space for us. Now we need a trip to recover excess apple prop stakes. We’re planning to use these for the siding of th… Continue

lars clausen Finish Your Plate

Hi Friends, “Finish Your Plate” was one of our house rules when I grew up. Right now at Solid Rock we have an expanding plateful of food. Early in the season we were wondering how we’d plant enough food. Now we’re wondering how we got so much. For those who like talking about these things, how about we meet this Saturday at 10 a.m. and share ideas about sharing our abundance? Some of us want our hands in the dirt. Some of us want to talk things through. Perhaps we should try a brief optional me… Continue

lars clausen Meeting Notes - Tomato Planting

HI Friends, This Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. please come out to Solid Rock if you’re able to. We have four flats of tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant to put in the ground, along with squash and melon seeds. The farm gets greener each week as the weather warms and the plants start to accelerate their growth. SATURDAY MEETING – Here’s the news. Watering: John and Marianne are fine with continuing our watering duties for now. The rest of us will take care of what the sprinklers don’t… Continue

lars clausen Latest from Scott and Ruth

Scott and Ruth here-- We had a good time working with the soil at SRF for our big planting day last Sunday. I tilled the new plot four times with minimal irrigation in between tilling times, to work at naturally eliminating the majority of perennial weeds (orchard grass and alfalfa). The design of the garden is for productivity, with an element of symmetry and whimsy thrown in to keep it interesting. A circle of lawn (for mulch) will grace the center, crossing paths follow the compass direction… Continue

lars clausen Farm News - June 10

LOTS HAPPENING: After two weekends of Los Angeles traffic and being away from our Saturday farm mornings, I was so happy to be back at Solid Rock. The roof is part way up on the shed. Amazing work by Gene. And John is up to 11 gophers trapped. The salad greens are spectacular. Squash seeds are coming up. Jeff tilled our open areas again, so they're ready for LoriAnne's starts. Folks spent time on the herb garden this weekend and its spectacularly weed free for at least a few days again.… Continue

lars clausen More Plants!

SALAD: What a delicious salad last night. Tom Thumb lettuce, Spinach, Arugula, and some speckled red lettuce too. Come on out Saturday and we'll do more thinning of the lettuce rows. Arugula is already bolting so we may pick the entire row. Yum. MORE PLANTS: Another gift of tomatoes and peppers is coming, thanks to LoriAnne. LoriAnne provided almost all our starts last year, and she has some leftovers again from her spring sale. We'll till up some ground on Saturday. Perhaps w… Continue

lars clausen Salad Dressing

Hi Friends, Feels good to be back in Chelan after 10 days in Los Angeles and Southern California. The farming bug has hit, though. While I was with my brother in San Diego we went to the nursery and got tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and basil for his garden. While we were planting these in his flower beds I was eyeing his lawn, thinking it could feed a family for most of a year. I hear the salad greens are growing fast at the farm. I’m thinking of bringing a bottle of salad dr… Continue

lars clausen Flowers and Straw

Another fine Wednesday evening at the farm. John drove his tractor mower over and Solid Rock got a manicure! And the tomatoes? Wow! Almost 200 were planted last Sunday. I put in some late corn last night, so make sure your barbecues are working for this summer. Thank you to Humberto for coming out Wednesday afternoon and rototilling the soil for the corn! Straw Man/ Straw Woman needed Saturday: Jeff weeded a long patch of the strawberries. We had time to cover some of the area with straw… Continue

lars clausen More Shed Materials Donated

Work Shed Materials Donated: Thank you to Chelan Building Supply for donating materials for our Solid Rock work shed. Joan took the list over to Brett Lamar and he said he'd be glad to help. Thank you! Now Gene is looking for anyone who wants to help with the construction. If Orion or Nedra or anyone else has contacts at ths schools of students wanting to earn their service hours, these folks will also be welcome to help. Let's try out our social network for this project. I created a FO… Continue

lars clausen Abutndance

Don’t Call This Work: High-School senior Orion is volunteering at the farm for the 40 hours of community service that each senior needs prior to graduating. After a couple of hours of weeding on Saturday morning he said, "I get it now, this farm is just like an online chat room." True enough. I doubt anyone described Saturday morning as work. Yet by the end of the morning we'd planted turnips and peas (Gene, Marcie, Anne), 14 new blueberry plants (Paul), herbs (Nedra), flowers (Joan) and… Continue

lars clausen Farm Workshed

Hi Farm Friends. Oftentimes when I'm at the farm with Jeff, I'll see him take a handful of dirt in his hands and exclaim over how amazing he finds the Solid Rock soil. WORKSHED: I have the same feeling of amazement when I think of the energy that continues to gather around the farm. I've gotten emails this past week, saying... “as soon as there's a lockable workshed out at the farm.” "I'll donate a wheelbarrow." "I'll donate a garden cart like the one's they use at Nancy's nursery," Wh… Continue

lars clausen Chips, Chips, beautiful Chips

We’ve got chips! Anne and I stopped by the farm Sunday, on our way back from Idaho. Thank you Wade Miller from All Seasons Rental for the use of your dump trailer, to Paul Singleton for loading the wood chips at the Recycle Center and for Humberto Ramirez for using your truck to bring the chips to the farm. Wow…so much is coming together at Solid Rock Farm. I have such a good feeling every time I’m there. Last Saturday’s Crew: Thanks to everyone who came out Saturday morning to w… Continue

lars clausen The Wish List

Hi Farm Friends, Here it is…the current Solid Rock Farm Wish List. This farm has definitely been a place of wishing and praying and dreaming and then seeing results happen. For those of you that are joining this year, this whole farm came together in the space of 24 hours last summer, from the time of seeing an ad at the Vogue, to agreeing on a 10 year use of the land. Three weeks later the land was tilled and the plants were in the ground. So…now that we’re rolling, here are some items that… Continue

lars clausen Farm Wishlist - Workshed

Thanks to the high school we have 100 new cabbages planted, trying to get a start in the windy weather of this season. Next workday is this Saturday at 9 a.m. WORKSHED: John Brownfield was asking if we’re making any progress on locating a workshed that can be placed on the farm. Which brings up our wishlist we had displayed at Earth Day. WISH LIST THOUGHTS: 1. Joan, will you send out the wish list from Earth Day so we can all take a look at it? Amongst our membership we may have direct connect… Continue
